2012 was a strong year for Ford’s venerable stable of utility vehicles and crossovers.

In the U.S., the all-new Ford Escape was certified by the EPA with best-in-class highway fuel economy for a small SUV with an automatic transmission. Its 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine bests the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 with a 33 mpg highway fuel economy certification, while the 2.0-liter EcoBoost provides 240 horsepower and 3,500 lbs. of towing capability.

Regardless of engine – 1.6 or 2.0-liter EcoBoosts or the 2.5-liter four-cylinder – Ford’s all-new Escape will return fuel economy of at least 30 mpg on the highway.

Another popular feature is Escape’s hands-free liftgate, which allows access to cargo in the back of the vehicle without having to fumble for keys.

Kuga – Escape’s European counterpart – was introduced at the Geneva Auto Show last year. Along with Explorer and Edge, Kuga and EcoSport were shown at the 2012 China auto show as well, marking the introduction of these utilities into the Chinese market.

In North America, Explorer Sport went on sale in the fall boasting a 365-horsepower 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine, a high-fashion interior and fuel economy that is class leading.

After its first year on the market, the Police Interceptor utility vehicle, saw strong orders. This purpose-built utility complements the all-new Police Interceptor sedan and gives government agencies greater versatility and choice.
