Job Description Job Description The Telematics OBD Module Core Engineer will be responsible for design, development and implementation of a "fast to market" cellular device to support vehicle connectivity. The primary purpose of the OPD Telematics Module, or dongle, is to provide connectivity as a modem and enable connectivity functionality via access the electrical network structure. The dongle will act as an onboard tester, communicating diagnostic requests via various CAN busses, interfacing with backend or cloud servers over cellular, and communicating with cellular phones via cellular or BT/BLE. The dongle will support features such as: modem, Wi-Fi Hotspot, Location Services, Vehicle Data Services, Command and Control (locking/starting), BT or BLE, and many others. The position may include future growth into other areas of telematics such as onboard modems and more extensive use of BLE technology.
Responsibilities Include:
Lead the dongle development, validation, and implementation on multiple vehicle applications, globally, across many vehicle electrical architectures.
Interface between the supplier and other Ford activities such as the Connected Vehicle teams, production engineering teams, and other team members to develop and validate the dongle features.
Support packaging of the dongle and proper placement to achieve optimal antenna performance.
Support/lead vehicle package design reviews utilizing tools such as Vismockup and digital buck.
Lead compatibility reviews to verify module, wiring, and attachment interface.
Lead target setting process to establish cost and weight targets including investment cost like tooling and engineering expense (ED&T).
Lead “Team of Four” process to complete supplier sourcing.target setting process to establish cost and weight targets including tooling and engineering expense (ED&T).
Manage and refine engineering requirements and validation plan for the dongle.
Work with the supplier and other Ford team members to ensure supplier deliverables are achieved for each milestone.
Drive resolution of engineering issues with cross-functional and supplier teams, develop trade-off assessment for difficult decision alternatives.
Support meetings and any activity related to maintenance of quality documentation which may include support for development or update of the Engineering specification (ES), Software Functional Specification (FS), Failure Modes Effects Analysis (FMEA), Failure Mode Avoidance (FMA) review of known problems from similar surrogate features, Parameter mapping of design “noise” factors (P-diagram), and development of the Design Verification Plan (DVP).
The position will include future growth into other areas of telematics such as onboard modems and more extensive use of BLE technology is highly likely.
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering (Electrical, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical with Electronic background)
2+ years of experience in design and release of Telematics electronic control module for automotive OEM and / or for automotive electronic control manufacturer.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master of Science Degree in Engineering (Electrical, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical with Electronic background)
2+ year’s knowledge of Vehicle CAN / Ethernet networking and communication.
1+ years of demonstrated experience with program management and supplier management capabilities
Experience in automotive infotainment and telematics systems or automotive connectivity solutions such as Wi-Fi, Cellular, Bluetooth, or vehicle networking is desired.
Demonstrated experience developing and conducting laboratory and vehicle tests
Strong project and requirement management skills
Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and with cross functional global teams
Independent worker and capable of delivering multiple project commitments concurrently
