Advancing Our Planet
See how we are changing how our vehicles are made
Automotive companies can make a positive impact on millions of people by empowering employees and protecting human rights in the supply chain. We know, because we’ve been doing it for more than a century.
The challenges faced by women at work and the benefits of diversity are both widely understood, yet equal gender representation is a challenge for many businesses. Creating workplaces that foster equality and inclusion, through training, awareness-raising and strong talent pipelines, requires cultural transformation and proactive leadership.
We aspire to become the most inclusive and diverse global company
The corporate landscape is dynamic and disruptive, so companies increasingly need fresh thinking and new perspectives from a diverse workforce. To ensure we remain an employer of choice and stay fit for the future, we’re changing how we work. Our Smart Redesign plan will drive a global transformation of Ford’s entire structure and culture, as well as our values and behaviors, now known as Our Truths (pdf, 48KB).
Jim Hackett, our President and CEO, has joined hundreds of other business leaders in supporting CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion, signing the “I Act On” pledge on Ford’s behalf.

We aspire to become the most inclusive and diverse global company. We know that difference makes us stronger and more innovative. We seek to reinforce the strong connection and value that diversity brings to our business, establishing specific goals and communicating best practices and opportunities. By attracting, developing and retaining a diverse workforce, we are developing a leadership pipeline and building diverse groups at all levels. We foster an environment where employees can be themselves and do their best work.
Our inaugural SHE-MOVES (Strengthen Her: Mobilizing Ventures for Social Innovation) program was launched in May 2019, empowering women in India, South Africa and Nigeria to develop their communities through mobility services. Grants provided by Ford Motor Company and Ford Fund went to the first successful applicants, whose community-level social enterprises focus on women, either as leaders or beneficiaries.
The successful organizations were:
Ford was included in the 2019 Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index in recognition of our commitment to transparent gender reporting and advancing equality in the workplace.
A typical car contains around 40,000 parts, comprising up to 1,000 different materials, all of which need to be sourced ethically and responsibly. This requires collaboration between stakeholders to identify risks, agree on remedial actions, share best practice and adopt measures to monitor and report on any action taken.
We aspire to responsibly source all raw materials used within our vehicles globally
An electric car battery contains up to 20 pounds of cobalt, and demand is rising as more drivers switch to electrified vehicles. Most of the world’s cobalt comes from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a country affected by civil war, political instability and forced labor. This makes the responsible sourcing of the cobalt needed for battery production a challenge that we can only hope to solve by working collaboratively with our supply chain partners to develop a chain of trust and transparency.

In 2018, we assessed our salient human rights issues (pdf, 2.8MB) against the UN Guiding Principles Reporting Framework. In this industry-first assessment, we identified our supply chain as a significant risk area. To check our cobalt sourcing meets the highest ethical standards, we’ve joined an IBM-led project to digitally trace and validate cobalt from a mine in the DRC, via a refinery (China) and a battery factory (South Korea), to a U.S. Ford plant. The details of the trip will be recorded on a blockchain platform, demonstrating how materials are responsibly produced, traded and processed to OECD standards.
A blockchain is a series of time-stamped data records managed by a network of computers, with “blocks” of data bound together in a “chain.” This digital information can be shared but not copied or changed, making it totally transparent and ensuring everyone involved is accountable.
Businesses need healthy, vibrant communities, and corporate philanthropy is only one way to help them flourish. Companies are becoming increasingly strategic with their community support, giving time, money and effort to projects that align with their key activities and business objectives.
Focusing on three key areas, we support good causes in our neighborhoods and build partnerships to address the challenges faced by communities around the world.

Through the Bill Ford Better World Challenge, we offer grants to support community projects that address issues around mobility, food and shelter, and access to water and sanitation. Now in its third year, the program has awarded a total of $1.4 million to seven projects in Mexico, the United States, Thailand, India and South Africa. In 2018, a total of $450,000 went to two projects:
The Mobile Air-to-Water Filtration System in Cape Town and Port Elizabeth in South Africa uses a converted Ford Ranger to turn moisture from the air into drinking water for drought-stricken areas. In addition to Ford awarding a $200,000 grant, Ford Research and Advanced Engineering also invested in the project, which is delivered in partnership with WorldVision South Africa.
A grant of $250,000 went to the Ford MoVe/Community Vending initiative, run in collaboration with the Salvation Army. The program uses a customized Ford Transit to distribute first aid, hygiene products, diapers and clothing to the Detroit Homeless Network. Special vending machines around the city are available 24 hours a day to meet the immediate needs of vulnerable people.
Over the past 10 years, we’ve invested more than $166 million in southeast Michigan, and Ford volunteers have participated in nearly 10,000 community service projects in the area.
Through our work in enhancing people’s lives, we are contributing to the following UN SDGs:

1 While this ratio provides a rough measure of pay equity, it does not account for individual circumstances such as job titles, education, and experience. Such factors may explain much of the difference between the female and male averages. A peer group consists of employees in the same region, salary grade, and skill team, when available.
