NEW DELHI, India, 1 June, 2013 – Ford India sold 5,993 vehicles in combined domestic wholesales and exports in May 2013 as macroeconomic factors such as high interest rates continued to affect consumer sentiment.

Exports rose 18 percent to 1,991 units from 1,693 units last year. Domestic wholesales accounted for 4,002 units in May, compared with 6,036 units during the same period last year.

“Despite the difficult industry situation we are confident of  the long-term potential of the Indian market, Stronger export sales are a clear sign that our One Ford plan is working with more products that consumers want and value,” said Anurag Mehrotra, vice president, Sales, Ford India. “With our aggressive expansion plans and the introduction of exciting new global products and technologies in India, we’re reiterating our commitment to the region.”

That commitment was on display in Goa, where Ford organized a one-of-a-kind experiential Tech Deep Dive and pre-launch drive for the eagerly awaited Ford EcoSport urban SUV. Close to 200 national and international media attended the drive in May and shared extremely positive reviews on the EcoSport. Customers will be able to book the urban SUV at all of Ford’s showrooms in India starting in June.

“We are thrilled with the rave reviews for the EcoSport and are confident that it will be a game-changer that will strengthen our position in India,” said Mehrotra.

The EcoSport brings to India several segment firsts, including the award-winning 1.0 litre EcoBoost engine, and SYNC, the in-car connectivity and entertainment system jointly developed with Microsoft. It will be the first vehicle in India available with Ford’s pioneering Emergency Assist System, which can automatically alert emergency services after an accident.

Festive offers from Ford India in May brought great savings on products including the Ford Figo and Classic on the occasion of Akshay Tritiya. The excitement will carry on into June with the MyEndeavour alterrain, a five-part adventure driving series on the National Geographic Channel, featuring five individuals and their unique journeys. And Ford India continued to implement its plans to reach out to more consumers with the opening of a 3S facility in Nalgonda, Andhra Pradesh. Ford now has 260 sales and service outlets across 138 cities in India.

“In addition to our commitment to bringing new vehicles to India, we are focused on augmenting the customer experience and going further to increase our footprint in India,” said Mehrotra. “The 3S facility in Nalgonda brings us a step closer to our goal of having more than 500 sales and service outlets across India around mid-decade.”
