BRENTWOOD, Essex, 6 September 2010 – Ford's leadership of the UK vehicle market in August confirmed the customer appeal of the company's vehicle range heading into September.  Sales are boosted in September by the registration plate change.

According to official figures released today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, Ford was the overall car sales leader in August and for the year to date, with 7,245 and 184,037 registrations, respectively.  The overall market slumped 17.5 per cent versus a year ago when scrappage sales provided a major, but temporary, stimulus.

Ford Fiesta and Ford Focus were the UK No 1 and 2 best sellers in August, and for the year to date.  Ford Fiesta was also the favourite for retail buyers in August and for the year to date.

The strength in depth of Ford's car range is reflected by Ford Fiesta, Ford Focus and Ford Galaxy all being clear leaders in their market segments, securing 23, 21 and 63 per cent of sales in their respective segments for the year to date.

Fleet sales take a proportionately higher share of the market during August.  Ford led this sector for the month and for the year to date with 5,364 and 106,116 registrations respectively.  Ford Fiesta, Ford Focus and Ford Galaxy were also their respective fleet segment market leaders.

Ford Transit and Ford Fiesta Van head their respective commercial vehicle segments with 36 and 60 per cent shares of their respective segments for the year to date.

Ford Transit was the clear leader in overall commercial vehicles sales with 1,817 registrations in August and 26,804 for the year to date, increases of 325 and 4,842, compared with the same periods last year.

Nigel Sharp, managing director Ford of Britain, said: "August is traditionally a weak sales month, ahead of the bumper registrations in September when, this year, the '60' registration plate is introduced.  With our clearer pricing policy, combined with new heavyweight advertising communications and our best ever vehicle range, Ford is very well positioned.  Our customers have the assurance that the high-quality and technically advanced features of Ford vehicles are now matched with a competitive price and offer outstanding value."
