BRUSSELS/COLOGNE, January 14, 2011 – Ford is announcing further powertrain enhancements for its portfolio of recently freshened flagship large cars; the Mondeo, S-MAX and Galaxy models at the 2011 Brussels Motor Show

From February a new, efficient 1.6-litre Duratorq TDCi with peak power of 115 PS (85 kW), will add to the already very comprehensive engine range for Ford's flagship large cars. At the same time the Ford Auto-Start-Stop system will also be made available for this small displacement diesel engine as well as for the recently introduced 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine (160 PS / 118 kW).

The combination of the 1.6-litre Duratorq TDCi and Ford Auto-Start-Stop system also builds a solid foundation for the new Ford Mondeo ECOnetic, with homologated CO2 emission as low as 114 g/km.

Finally the new 2.2-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel flagship (200 PS / 147 kW) will also now be available with Ford's smooth-operating six-speed automatic transmission for powerful yet relaxed driving experience.

"The introduction of the new small-displacement diesel engine and of the Ford Auto-Start-Stop system is another important step towards even more sustainable mobility," said Rolf Deges, Chief Program Engineer for Ford of Europe's recently freshened CD-Car range. "All through Europe there is a growing demand for frugal, smaller displacement powertrains and new technologies, and we are more than happy to address this demand with our new entries."

1.6-litre Ford Duratorq TDCi
Effectively replacing the 115 PS version of the 2.0-litre Duratorq TDCi engine in its role as an entry level diesel powertrain, the new 1.6-litre engine delivers a whopping 270 Nm of torque from 1750 - 2500 rpm to Mondeo, S-MAX and Galaxy. "With this torque performance, it's now possible to have such a small displacement diesel engine driving even large cars like the Ford Galaxy in a more than appropriate way – and at very low fuel consumption," said Deges. "We have made very good headway with this base engine in our smaller passenger car ranges, and with the calibration fully adjusted to the demands of larger and heavier vehicles, the 1.6-litre Duratorq TDCi is the perfect choice for cost-conscious large car customers."

The 1.6-litre Duratorq TDCi engine comes as standard with maintenance free coated Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) that requires no additives for filter regeneration.

For the Mondeo in all available bodystyles and with standard 6-speed manual transmission the combined fuel economy is as low as 4.9 l/100 km (57.55 mpg*), which equates to a CO2 emission of just 129 g/km. For the S-MAX and Galaxy the combined fuel economy is still at a very good 5.4 l/100 km (52.22 mpg, 144 g/km).

These excellent figures are also achieved by adding standard Ford ECOnetic Technologies features to the range, including Smart Regenerative Charging, the Ford Eco Mode driver information system and an Active Grille Shutter system. All of these technologies come as standard equipment on the new 1.6-litre Duratorq TDCi engine.

Ford Auto-Start-Stop for Mondeo, S-MAX and Galaxy
With the availability of the Ford Auto-Start-Stop system for the 1.6-litre displacement Duratorq TDCi and EcoBoost engines to Mondeo, S-MAX and Galaxy, Ford is taking another important step towards an even more sustainable mobility even with large and luxurious vehicles.

Ford Auto-Start-Stop system can reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to five per cent in mixed driving conditions. In an urban environment and in heavy traffic with frequent stops the savings could increase to as much as 10 per cent.

Ford Auto-Start-Stop features an enhanced and very durable starter motor to support the increased number of engine starts and a stronger pinion-engagement mechanism with reduced noise levels.

A high performance Improved Flooded (IF) Battery with a Voltage Quality Module (VQM) completes the system. It maintains the energy supply to electrical components like the entertainment systems during the re-starting phase of the engine. In addition a Battery Monitoring System (BMS) continuously monitors the Battery status and communicates with the Ford Auto-Start-Stop system, so the system will leave the engine running in the event that the battery does not have a sufficient level of charge.

An integrated system of sensors is used to detect when the driver performs an action that signals the intent to drive off, such as pressing the accelerator or clutch pedal.
As soon as the driver prepares to move away, the engine starts quietly and almost instantly - it only takes the system around 0.3 seconds to fire up. The process is virtually imperceptible, and happens before gear selection is completed.

The Ford Auto-Start-Stop system for both high-tech 1.6-litre engines with Mondeo, S-MAX and Galaxy is available throughout all European markets – in some European markets it's even standardized.

New Ford Mondeo ECOnetic: 114g CO2 and standard Ford Auto-Start-Stop
By making use of the new 1.6-litre Duratorq TDCi engine with standard Ford Auto-Start-Stop and additional measurements for even lower fuel consumption, the new Ford Mondeo ECOnetic model will be the most frugal Mondeo to date. It will go on sale from the first quarter of 2011.

The new Mondeo ECOnetic features a specially calibrated 115 PS (85 kW) version of the 1.6-litre Ford Duratorq TDCi engine equipped with a standard cDPF and coupled to a Ford Durashift 6-speed manual transmission with a longer final drive of 1:3.69 (compared to 1:4.06 for the standard Mondeo) and purposefully matched ratios across all gears.

The new Mondeo ECOnetic model also includes a special aerodynamic kit including lowered suspension and low rolling resistant tyres.  The combination of all of these detail changes means the second generation Mondeo ECOnetic is delivering a combined fuel consumption of just 4.3 l/100km (65.6 mpg)*, which translates into average CO2 emissions of 114 g/km – an important tax break point in some European markets.

Prioritising fuel efficiency does not have to come at the expense of luxury, as the new Ford Mondeo ECOnetic will be available across all Mondeo bodystyles and series except for the Titanium S.

"We found there is no better place to unveil all of this important news than the Brussels Motor Show," explained Deges. "It's not only that our complete range of Mondeo, S-MAX and Galaxy are produced with pride in our Belgian Genk plant – Belgium is also a market focussing very much on our Ford ECOnetic models. With an average CO2 emission of just 114 g/km the new Mondeo ECOnetic undercuts the local 115g/km tax break point, which makes it even more attractive to Belgian customers."

New Durashift 6-tronic automatic transmission for the 2.2-litre Duratorq TDCi engine
Ford's 200 PS 2.2-litre Duratorq TDCi powerhouse can now also be ordered with the optional comfort of a 6-speed automatic transmission. The renewed auto box is a second generation of the well-proven Durashift 6-tronic transmission. This torque converter transmission is a perfect match for the torquey 2.2-litre Duratorq TDCi with a peak torque of 420 Nm in a range from 1750 – 3000 rpm – with even 450 Nm available under transient overboost condition.

Designed and calibrated ultra-smooth gear changes for the optimum driving experience, this transmission also offers a manual and sport mode: When the gear lever is pushed from 'D' position into the right column, the then activated sport mode offers a more responsive and powerful performance with quicker downshifts and higher revving before shifting upwards. Also with the shifter in the right shifting column, a full automatic mode is available for full driver involvement, with downshifts being practiced by pushing the lever forward, and upshifts by pulling the lever to the rear.

Paramount for the successful integration to the Ford of Europe large car family has been the development of the unit software via the Transmission Control Module (TCM).

The TCM is linked to the Engine Control Module (ECM) and controls the up- and downshifts, the neutral idle control feature, the engagements into forward and reverse gears and performs a self-diagnosis function by monitoring the communication status of each sensor, all electronic components and the ECM.

The transmission hardware was designed and manufactured for Ford by Aisin AW, a company with a worldwide and longstanding reputation for providing reliable transmissions that break new ground in the automatic transmission arena. Ford's engineers worked closely with Aisin AW to tailor the TCM software to complement and enhance Ford's acclaimed driving dynamics.

The TCM incorporates sophisticated, adaptive learning procedures. After the prescribed running-in period the transmission will provide optimum gear shifting smoothness for all conditions irrespective of terrain or driver input. The transmission will adapt to perform within its optimum window of operation to always provide maximum smoothness when changing gear, irrespective of the mode selected.

Updates to this transmission include a further reduced inertia of the torque converter and bearings as well as a revised strategy that enables bypassing of the converter unit much more often than before, both adding to a higher efficiency of the transmission unit.

"The combination of the 2.2-litre Duratorq TDCi with the Durashift 6-tronic transmission is really a connoisseur's choice: it really delivers a powerful yet very relaxed and refined driving experience," enthused Rolf Deges. "With these attributes in place, this combination is the perfect addition to our large car range, and supplements well to the already available combinations of the Ford PowerShift 6-speed double-wet clutch transmission with the 2.0-litre Duratorq TDCi with 140 and 163 PS."

The extra comfort of the torque converter automatic doesn't have to mean high fuel economy: The combined fuel economy for a Ford Mondeo with this powertrain is set at a frugal 6.5 l/100km (43.4 mpg*) which translates into an average CO2 emission of 173 g/km. The extra urban fuel economy is even down to a figure of 5.1 l/100km (46.1 mpg*).
