Safe driving is something to sing about. Just ask the Pennsylvania teens who won the "Belt It Out" song contest sponsored by Ford Driving Skills for Life.
Amber Ardolino, Chalisse Monroe, Levi Keller and Trey Singletary each received a $5,000 savings bond for their original song and video "Drive Safely" about the potential dangers behind the wheel. The students learned about their first place finish during an assembly at their school – Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School. The surprise was carefully staged and included a performance by popular entertainer Kate Voegele, who asked the stunned students to join her on stage.
"Belt it Out" invited teens in a national competition to compose, perform, and record songs with a clear message regarding the #1 killer of teens – vehicle crashes. A panel of judges narrowed the entries to ten finalists. The public was invited to vote for their favorite and more than 91,000 people participated. The top three in the public vote were judged by Voegele, who selected the Lincoln Park students as the grand prize winners.
The 2nd place winners, who each receive a $3,000 savings bond, are from Hill Murray School in Maplewood, Minn.: Benjamin Carlson, Kathryn Gentner, Abigail Herickhoff, Joseph Scherping, and Seth Josephson. A $1,000 savings bond goes to each of the 3rd place winners from Rosemount High School in Rosemount, Minn.: Mackenzie Carlson, Kristen Farris, Dave Iverson, Alex Norris and Kasey Tousignant.
