SHANGHAI, China, 7 June, 2011 – Ford Motor China sold 45,162 wholesale vehicles in May, a 14 percent increase from May 2010. For the first five months of the year, Ford Motor China sold 230,068 wholesale units, a 15 percent increase from the same period a year ago.
Ford Focus retains its popularity in the highly competitive mid-sized car segment with 16,756 wholesale units sold in May, a 33 percent jump over last year. May marks the ninth consecutive month that the Focus has seen double-digit year-on-year sales growth in China.
Ford Mondeo, equipped with the eco-friendly and award winning EcoBoost engine and PowerShift transmission, continued its strong momentum with 6,005 wholesale units sold, a 46 percent increase from May last year.
Changan Ford Mazda Automobile (CFMA), Ford Motor's passenger vehicle joint-venture in China, reported 32,996 wholesale unit sales in May, representing a 19 percent increase year-on-year. Year-to-date, CFMA has sold 173,189 vehicles, a 4 percent rise from the same period a year ago.
Jiangling Motors Corporation (JMC), Ford's commercial vehicle investment in China, continues to lead the commercial vehicle industry with 90,055 wholesale unit sales reported for the January-May period, a 23 percent increase from the same period last year. Ford Transit made a strong contribution with sales of 25,422 units, also a 23 percent increasecompared to the same period in 2010.
To support Ford's aggressive growth plan in the world's largest auto market, CFMA signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Chongqing Municipal Government last month for its first transmission plant in China. The plant, scheduled to begin production in 2013, will have initial annual capacity of 400,000 units.
