Job Description

Core Functional Safety Engineer – Research and Advanced Controls positions offered by Ford Motor Company Dearborn, MI.

  • Development of Functional Safety Concepts, Technical Safety Concepts, Functional Safety Requirements and Technical Safety Requirements.
  • Defining new methods to leverage systems engineering tools for Functional Safety.
  • Driving the development and adoption of Functional Safety processes, guidelines, templates, and training.
  • Analyzing the safety of each system as an integrated whole even when composed of diverse, specialized components and sub-systems.
  • Mentoring others on the application of Functional Safety, Model Based Systems Engineering, and Systems Engineering processes.
  • Ability to incorporate and extend the use of the Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) process for Functional Safety.


Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, controls engineering or a related field.
  • 1+ years’ experience working with complex systems (Co-op and coursework allowed)
  • 1+ years’ experience with software development (Co-op and coursework allowed)
  • 1+ years of previous work experience with Safety Analysis Techniques (examples: FMEA, FTA, HAZOP, STPA). (Co-op and coursework allowed)
  • 1+ years of previous work experience in Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessments. (Co-op and coursework allowed)


Preferred Requirements:
  • Master’s degree in in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, controls engineering or a related field.
  • ISO 26262 Automotive Safety Standard experience
  • Requirements engineering methodology
  • Capable of multitasking for deliverables on multiple projects
  • Requirement management tools (examples: TeamCenter, FSMS, DOORS, SDS, Design Rules)
  • ASIL decomposition
  • Object oriented modeling
  • SysML (MagicDraw)
  • Matlab, Simulink, C++ coding experience
