Job Description
Technology is advancing, connection mechanisms are growing, and consumers and hackers are becoming more sophisticated. With increasing networking between modules and access points into the vehicle, the attack surface has increased thereby opening up new potential vulnerabilities. Automobiles are no longer mere mechanical devices but are controlled by dozens of digital computers coordinated by internal networks. While all this technology has allowed for better personalized experiences, seamless integration into a person’s lifestyle, differential services, predictive diagnostics and safer driving conditions, the increase in complexity drives the need for advanced security and data solutions.

Ford’s Research and Advanced Engineering organization is expanding its Vehicle Cyber Security Team in order to explore, design and implement next generation vehicle electrical and network components that inherently reduce the attack surface of our vehicles and reduce risk to our automotive environment by exploring how to protect our technologies that use artificially intelligent system design and functionality. We are both researching and reviewing new enterprise-wide features and technologies, as well as providing frameworks, processes and tools to help the research.

The ideal candidate will have outstanding security design analytical skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. We are looking for exceptionally creative, motivated and talented Cyber Security engineers to join our team to evaluate and develop advanced features, toolkits and consult on artificially intelligent and trained related architectures. We collaborate extensively within Ford and with external partners, thus we require exceptional communication and collaborative skills.

Work tasks span from the early research and development stages of ideation, experience and use case development, through development of Proof-of-Concept solutions, vehicle integration and finally delivery of features and processes to the Product Development organization.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Conduct cyber security research around artificial intelligence systems, sensors, methodologies and protections
  • Participate and attend automotive security conferences and trainings
  • Collaborate on engineering projects with outside partners in academia, government, and other internal Ford teams
  • Model how machine learning is able to be exploited and use that information to generate requirements, testing and validations that can be leveraged within Ford processes.
  • Development and maintenance of tools (e.g. Fuzzing, Adversarial Perturbations) for use in internal vehicle penetration and compliance testing
  • Threat Analysis and Risk Assessment tool/modeling of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence Processes (e.g. STRIDE, DREAD, HEAVENS, OCTAVE)
  • Lead technology and security feature projects regarding Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. Create IEEE formatted research papers based on findings.
  • Actively ideate and invent new security techniques or countermeasures for in-vehicle artificial intelligence and machine learning products
  • Perform competitive analyses and maintain knowledge of emerging technologies in both the automotive and consumer electronics field
  • Develop security roadmap and assess products and services for viability
  • Some travel expected to cover critical Cyber Security Conferences or meet with other non-local team members (e.g. California)
Basic Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical and/or Computer Engineering required
  • 3+ years of cyber security experience (e.g. secure coding, secure execution, wireless security design, security process development, embedded/hardware, IOT, penetration testing and product rollout), university studies accepted
  • 2+ years of experience in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence university or work studies
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. degree or higher in technical/mathematical discipline
  • CISSP or CEH Certification
  • Strong communication and analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently, take follow-up on project deliverables, go above and beyond the task at hand
  • Strong mathematical and formal logic methodology experience, electrical principle knowledge and simulation tool experience
  • Understanding of electrical architecture, development, design principals
  • Understanding and experience in embedded and/or automotive systems
  • Work well in a small team and be flexible enough to work on any aspect of the project as needed
  • Ability to develop and maintain technical documentation as required
  • Familiarity with in-vehicle network architecture, modules, and protocols (CAN etc.)
  • Electrical or System Engineering vehicle module experience
  • Conceptual understanding of security methodologies and challenge
  • Knowledge regarding any of the following machine learning areas: Learning and Probabilistic Inference, Knowledge Representation and Reasoning, Search and Information Retrieval, Speech and Language, Vision and Sensor Systems, and/or Robotics
