Enhanced Rollover Protection
Front air bags are not designed to deploy if your vehicle rolls over. To protect you and your passengers in the event of a rollover, you need additional side-impact protection.
In vehicles with our Safety Canopy system installed, a sensor monitors the vehicle's roll angle and roll rate. If the system determines that a rollover may be imminent, the Safety Canopy deploys and can remain inflated for several seconds. The Safety Canopy can also be triggered in certain side-impact collisions.
On SUVs equipped with the system, the Safety Canopy helps protect passengers by covering approximately 65 percent of the window surface area in the first two rows. In the Ford Taurus X and Expedition, the system provides protection in all three rows.
Availability
We were the first domestic automobile manufacturer to offer side air bags designed to enhance head protection. Today, nearly all of our products offer side air bags that include enhanced head protection, and nearly all of our SUVs offer the Safety Canopy for enhanced head protection in both rollovers and side impacts.
