Mentoring Students in Detroit

We're working to strengthen our relationship with Detroit Public Schools. As that relationship develops, Detroit Public Schools students benefit from the wide range of skills and experiences Ford employees are able to share with them.

More Than Just Fast Cars

While a shiny new Mustang convertible might come to most young people's minds when they think of Ford, a group of seventh graders at Ruddiman Middle School know there's more to the company than the engine under its hood.

This summer, a special group of seventh graders will publish their first school newsletter, Ruddiman Times, under the guidance of Taurus McClain, project manager, and a group of IT volunteers.

Using his IT background, McClain took the lead in arranging the skills-based volunteer opportunity, combining writing and computer skills, into an educational course to introduce the students to the worlds of technology and journalism.

The program is the first in-depth computer skills class offered at Ruddiman. Each week, the students work on articles about topics ranging from sports to academics.
