Designing Icons: Moray Callum

As a boy, Moray Callum spent so much time sketching animals that his family members were convinced he might become a veterinarian. Much to the delight of car lovers the world over, he didn't — and instead went on to pen icons including the Mazda Miata MX-5.

Working His Magic

These days, Callum is working his magic for Ford North America as design director, cars. Since 2006, he's been responsible for implementing the design strategy and execution involving all Ford, Lincoln and Mercury cars and car-based crossovers.

As design director, Callum works closely with the rest of Design North America's creative team. He brings new energy to the Ford, Lincoln and Mercury cars and will further infuse boldness into both the exterior and interior designs on the expanding lineup of cars and crossovers.

Background

Callum's international design career started in 1982, when he began working for Chrysler Corp. UK and then Peugeot-Citroen PSA on passenger and commercial vehicles. After six years, he joined Ghia Spain as a consultant designer. His work included the Ghia Via concept vehicle in 1989, leading Ghia's design consultancy to Jaguar, and the Aston Martin Lagonda Vignale concept.

Callum joined Ford in 1995, where he designed key North American products, including the Ford EX off-roader concept and production vehicles such as the last-generation of Super Duty pickups.

From 2001 to spring of 2006, he was general manager of the Design Division at Mazda. At Mazda, he brought to life a new generation of Mazda vehicles, including the iconic all-new MX-5 and brand-new CX-7 crossover, along with the spirited lineup of Mazda2, Mazda3, Mazda5 and Mazda6.

Born in 1958, Callum graduated from Napier University in Edinburgh with a bachelor's degree in Industrial Design. He also holds a master's degree in Transportation Design from the Royal College of Art in London.
