Consumer Alert: Ford Edge Jeep Scam

CONSUMER ALERT: FORD EDGE JEEP SCAM

Background: Ford has been contacted about e-mails notifying consumers that they have won a "Ford Edge Jeep". These notifications are not coming from Ford Motor Company and appear to be a scam to obtain personal information from unsuspecting consumers.

Statement: Ford Motor Company is not affiliated in any way with e-mails, letters or programs related to “Ford Edge Jeep” lottery drawings. Ford Motor Company has not authorized permission to use its name, trademark or other intellectual property for use in this fraudulent activity. These e-mails appear to be a ploy to collect personal and financial information from unsuspecting consumers. This activity is a form of “phishing” wherein the source attempts to invite victims to respond in order to obtain personal and financial information. The messages are often made to look “official” through the use of formal language or references to an actual product, company or executive. Some common signs that a message is a scam include:

  • Spelling or grammatical errors in the message;
  • Improper use of company trademarks;
  • Requests for personal information in order to receive money or prizes.
  • Improper reference to a product, company or service. In this case, the sender mistakenly referenced the prize as a “Ford Edge Jeep;” Jeep is a Chrysler brand and Ford Edge is a Ford Motor Company brand. There is no such product as a “Ford Edge Jeep.”

Generally, “phishing” scams will often sound too good to be true. If you receive this message or a similar one, do not reply. Simply delete it. Do not initiate any correspondence or communication with the source. For more information about this fraudulent activity and others, please visit the World Lotteries site to learn more.
