Our Commitment to Improving Vehicle Safety

We've always been an industry leader in making cars, trucks, SUVs and other motor vehicles safer for drivers and passengers, beginning with our pioneering use of shatter-resistant auto safety glass in the 1920s. We were also the first automaker to feature factory-installed safety belts in the 1950s.

Through innovation, collaboration and education, we continue to help keep you and your family safe on the road.

Making Vehicles Safer

We're an industry leader in making safer vehicles. Some of the initiatives that have helped us earn that industry leader status include the following:

  • With 7 vehicles receiving IIHS "Top Safety Pick" awards, Ford leads the industry. These vehicles include Ford Taurus, Ford Taurus X, Ford Edge, Mercury Sable, Mercury MKX, Volvo XC90 and Volvo C70. In addition, 14 Ford, Lincoln and Mercury models have earned 5 out of 5 stars* in front crash auto safety ratings.
  • To promote safety belt usage, we introduced our Ford BeltMinder? system, which prompts drivers to fasten their safety belts. NHTSA has requested that the rest of the auto industry adopt similar systems, so we're offering Beltminder? technology to other manufacturers at no cost.
  • We were the first automaker to introduce vehicle safety technologies such as the Personal Safety System? and Safety Canopy?. The Personal Safety System? uses advanced sensors to provide the appropriate level of safety belt and airbag protection. Our Safety Canopy? is a system of side air curtains that help provide protection in side impacts and in the event of a rollover.

*Star ratings are part of the U.S. Department of Transportation's Safercar.gov Program.

Making Roads Safer

We're working with private sector groups and public organizations to make our roads safer. Programs we are supporting include the following:

  • Graduated Driving Licensing (GDL) programs for teens&EEMM;We encourage all states to incorporate maximum GDL requirements, promote safety belt use and discourage drunk driving.
  • Voluntary agreements on vehicle bumper height&EEMM;Working through the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, we're addressing crash compatibility issues that may occur when higher vehicles like trucks and SUVs collide with lower passenger cars. As a result, many of our light trucks and SUVs meet the front-to-front compatibility agreement in advance of the planned implementation timing, and nearly all Ford products offer side airbags that meet, in advance, the head protection requirements outlined in the front-to-side voluntary agreement.

What You Can Do

As a motorist, the most important contributions you can make to auto safety are also the simplest and most effective:

  • Make sure passengers in your vehicle buckle up and children are seated in the correct position in the proper safety car safety seat or booster seat for their age and size.
  • Always obey road use laws.
  • Remind friends and family to never drink and drive.
  • As a parent, make certain your teenager driver receives the proper training and experience needed to safely operate a motor vehicle.
