Ford Research and Advanced Engineering is expanding fuel cell development activities at its Dearborn Research and Innovation Center and is seeking an experienced PEM fuel cell performance modeling engineer. The position will focus on the development and utilization of physical and electrochemical models to predict fuel cell performance and durability. This is an excellent opportunity for a highly qualified and motivated engineer to join a diverse team of researchers tasked with shaping and delivering Ford’s future product strategy for fuel cell technology.

Responsibilities

  • Develop physical and electrochemical models to predict fuel cell stack performance with a focus on MEA level processes aimed at specific research objectives
  • Master an apply available fuel cell stack performance models (eg: Mizhou or Matlab-based models)
  • Cascade design parameters to fuel cell components resulting from models
  • Work with engineering and testing research teams to obtain necessary engineering data for model validation and calibration
  • Conduct modeling analyses in support of fundamental stack research and stack-system interface needs
  • Model documentation, version management, ongoing improvement and maintenance

Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Science in Chemistry or Bachelor of Applied Science in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering or Electrochemistry
  • 5+ years experience in fuel cell performance modeling with a major automotive manufacturer or as part of a major automotive manufacturer joint venture
Preferred Requirements:
  • Knowledge of commercial and/or Matlab-based fuel cell simulation software
  • Strong grasp of fuel cell fundamentals and ability to mathematically describe the physical and electrochemical phenomena
  • Able to translate model output to direct fuel cell component designs
  • Strong programming and numerical methods background
  • Experience with Six Sigma methodologies desired
  • Team player with strong interpersonal skills; able to work effectively in collaborative environment
  • Ability to work in a team with good written and oral communication skills
