In the tradition of the first-generation Volvo S80, which introduced groundbreaking safety innovations, the second-generation S80 is a showcase of Volvo safety research and development.
The long list of innovations found in S80 includes sophisticated crash energy absorption systems in the structure, the next generation of whiplash mitigation, new side airbags with separate chambers to protect chest and hips, and new protection for pedestrians.
Protective Safety
We designed S80's passenger compartment to keep passengers safe during an accident.
S80's patented front body structure has been divided into zones. In the event of a collision, the outer zones are responsible for most of the deformation, and the inner zones deform less as the collision forces get closer to the passenger compartment.
To help keep the engine from intruding into the passenger compartment during a collision, we used creative drivetrain design to add engine deformation capacity. We designed a transverse mounting for the engine and reduced of the exterior dimensions of the engine and transmission.
Improved Side Airbags
A new side airbag improves the effectiveness of the patented Volvo Side Impact Protection System.
Since the hips can withstand greater forces than the chest, we designed the new airbag with two separate chambers-one for the hips and one for the chest. The chamber targeted at protecting the hips can be inflated to a pressure up to five times higher than the chamber targeted at protecting the chest.
Pedestrian Protection
We designed S80 to help protect pedestrians and cyclists in the event of an accident. The front of the car has energy-absorbing features, including a well-proportioned, soft structure in front of the bumper to mitigate the risk of leg injuries.
To further reduce the risk of injury, we reinforced the lower edge of the spoiler and moved it forward, almost in line with the bumper, to distribute the impact over a greater area.
Personal Security
Improved personal security is a high priority for many buyers, and the Personal Car Communicator (PCC) is a world first from Volvo Cars that will help address their concerns.
The new PCC is an advanced pocket-sized control module that lets owners know if doors are locked or unlocked, whether the alarm is activated and whether someone is in the car (determined using a highly sensitive heartbeat sensor and an advanced calculation process).
Please note that PCC may not be available in some markets.
